Step into a world of timeless elegance with this exquisite antique Wedgwood tureen, crafted in the rarely-seen “Kyoto” pattern. Made in England in the 1930s, this fine example of transferware features deep cobalt-blue birds in flight framed by floral sprays, a border of scale motifs, and ornamental handles on either side.
Whether displayed in a period cabinet, styled as a centrepiece on a mahogany console, or used as part of a layered tablescape, this footed tureen makes a powerful collector’s statement.
✨ Highlights:
Authentic Wedgwood “Kyoto” pattern, backstamped with crown mark
Circa 1930s, based on backstamp style and ceramic body
Blue and white transferware with Orientalist/Shin-hanga aesthetic
Footed base, elegant twin handles
Measures: 10" (25.4 cm) across handles | 7.25" bowl width
Made from vintage earthenware with light surface glaze crazing
Aged glaze shows some interior browning, stable and purely visual
No chips, no cracks—lovingly preserved condition
Rare form – this tureen is seldom found, especially without lid
🔍 Collector Notes:
This piece is part of Wedgwood's early 20th-century export designs, likely created for the Japanese market. The pattern name “Kyoto” and style echo the enduring influence of Blue Willow ware with a twist—note the absence of the willow tree and presence of swooping birds.
